Evaluation of the Yokosuka Base for the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Operation

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A568043. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research concerns evaluation of the Yokosuka base for the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet operation. The research will focus on fleet operating costs and required fleet assets for a given level of operation. In particular, I will examine what value in terms of fleet operating costs and assets does the United States receive using the Yokosuka base to deploy its fleet in Asia. A computer model will be developed to evaluate this benefit and will compare the differences in operating costs and required fleet assets between the Yokosuka base and other bases such as Guam and Hawaii.

With actual newsreels on the attack of Pearl Harbor, this WWII film shows the menace behind warfare, and the casualties it causes. Destruction and debris litter the ocean waters, as footage shows the devastation. Refugees all across Europe walk away from their homes, and whole towns are seen crumbling to the ground because of man's own wreckage.

The attack on Pearl Harbor (or Hawaii Operation, Operation Z, as it was called by the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters) was an unannounced military strike conducted by the Japanese navy against the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941 (Hawaiian time, December 8 by Japan Standard Time), later resulting in the United States becoming militarily involved in World War II. It was intended as a preventive action to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from influencing the war the Empire of Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia against Britain, the Netherlands, and the United States. The attack consisted of two aerial attack waves totaling 353 aircraft, launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers.

HEAVY METAL: THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER

Pearl Harbor marked a turning point for the US Navy. Before December 7, 1941, the battleship was the premier vessel; afterwards, its place was taken by the aircraft carrier. The pride of the Pacific fleet during World War II were the Essex class aircraft carriers. At over 800 feet long and with a displacement of 27,000 tons, these massive ships were able to launch hundreds of aircraft against the enemy, and they did so time and again, with devastating results. But they were vulnerable despite their size, and the Japanese launched repeated kamikaze attacks aimed at detonating the tens of thousands of gallons of highly-volatile aircraft fuel they carried. Despite several direct hits, not one Essex carrier was lost to these suicide attacks.

President Roosevelt said December 7, 1941 was "a date which will live in infamy." He was right. Japan's attack on U.S. forces in the Pacific changed America forever. 2,403 Americans were killed, 21 warships were sunk or damaged, and the bombing of six airfields catapulted the United States into WWII.
But what you may not know is that prior to the air attack on that peaceful Sunday morning, the Japanese Imperial Navy launched a secret weapon-- five midget submarines. Their goal was to sneak into Pearl Harbor and torpedo our fleet. As you will see, what actually happened to those midget submarines is now rewriting history.
In this revealing episode of "War Stories with Oliver North," you'll meet one of the Japanese submariners who launched a midget sub and believed in death before defeat.
And 1,200 feet down in a watery grave, you'll see the midget submarine that was sunk by the USS Ward and her brave sailors an hour before the air attack. This amazing discovery proves that the first casualties of the Pacific War were Japanese.
This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media.

A Salute To Our Veterans is a book about individual stories that veterans have told the writer during interviews, what they did as youngsters, about when they were old enough to go to war, where they signed up, went to basic training, what unit they served with, and where they fought during the wars.

In the book are stories never told before by 29 veterans of World War II, 10 Korean War veterans, and six veterans from the Vietnam War and others.

In the book are sailors, solders, marines and Air Force men. The stories mention the ships they were apart of and the ships that carried them to battles.

The World War II veterans have told me stories of battles that they fought 60 years ago, and they are still fresh in their minds. It was amazing that when I put it down on paper, they wanted to check to see if I was as precise as they were. They never forget.

Some people that read the stories will be able to relate to them, for they may have been at the same battle. Readers may find in my book someone they use to know, a lost comrade. The veterans remembered the units they fought with also.

There is also a whole history of events that took you back to places during the wars. One of the veterans gives a full detailed story about his experiences in Vietnam, when he was fighting during Vietnam's worst fighting, the Tet Offensive and Khe Shan Operations. It also features a US Marine stationed in China after the end of WWII.

After reading this book, you will be more aware that there are veterans like the ones in the book in your neighborhood. You might even want to give them one of these books for a gift.

With its smooth, sandy beach, the quiet coastal town of Pacific City, on the coast of Oregon's Tillamook County, is the perfect home for a unique group of boats. The Pacific City dory fleet has a proud history spanning more than 100 years. Nestled in the natural shelter provided by Cape Kiwanda, the fleet lives on today as one of the most interesting fishing fleets in the world. The small flat-bottomed boats dare the ocean as they crash through the surf headed for the plentiful waters of the Pacific. At day's end, they ride the waves back to shore and slide onto the beach. The original design of the dory allows it to launch from and land on the shore. Through the inherent dangers of ocean fishing, governmental restriction, international fishing competition, and, most recently, the influx of surfers and civilization, the dedicated fishermen have held on to tradition.

Wrath of God: Halsey's Typhoons: Peril On The Sea

In December 1944, the U.S. Navy was engaged in a ferocious battle in the South Pacific when a new foe arrived, one that proved more deadly than the Japanese. With virtually no warning, the fleet, which was commanded by the legendary Admiral "Bull" Halsey, found itself tossed across the seas by a powerful typhoon. The 100 mile-an-hour winds created sixty foot swells, and despite the best efforts of the sailors, three destroyers capsized and sank. The USS Hull was among the ships lost in the storm, and in HALSEY'S TYPHOONS, three crewmembers recall their ordeal in gripping detail. That they were rescued is a testament to the dedication of Captain Henry Plage of the USS Tabberer. But they were the lucky ones--790 sailors lost their lives to the storm. Just six months later, Halsey's fleet was caught unprepared by yet another typhoon. Mercifully, this one was less damaging, but the admiral's mismanagement of the fleet in the face of these meteorological threats led a Court of Inquiries to recommend he be relieved of his duties. HALSEY'S TYPHOONS serve as a powerful reminder of man's limitations when faced with the intrepid forces of nature.
This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media.
Tender Duty

USS Daniels, a crowded destroyer tender is anchored in New Guinea when the main characters, Ensigns Renton and York, report for duty. Captain Ball, was a submarine officer. The executive officer, Commander Riley, was recalled for his second war. Lieutenant Commander Cass, the remarkably able Repair Officer, supervises artisans working three shifts every day -- assisted by civilian technicians -- repairing destroyers and other vessels.
Chief Quartermaster Thornhill, an Asiatic Fleet "retread", often spins lusty stories of the Asiatic Fleet and tells of a storm in 1933 when USS Rampo measured and reported a wave 112 feet high.
Liberty is rare. Morale is low. The captain delays the nightly movies while entertaining a nurse. Junior officers search for a still. Mail is censored. Christmas mail is torpedoed. Ensign York finds a floating body. New Year's Eve is observed by shooting at unidentified planes and wounding the gunnery officer; a destroyer drops an enemy plane.
Daniels convoys Army ships to the Philippines where Captain Ball and Chieft Steward Tomales go ashore. The crew's anticipated liberty is denied. Chief Tomales tells of his families suffering under Japanese occupation. Daniels rescues downed fliers while sheparding a convoy to Subic Bay where damaged ships await repair. Supervised recreation parties are allowed on a deserted island. For a few hours Ens. Renton is the happy owner of a monkey.
Aboard a PT Boat, Ensigns York and Renton dart among 80 torpedoed Japanese ships and roam recently liberated Manila. A Japanese vessel, disguised as a hospital ship, but filled with able troops is brought into port, and the ensigns go board. The assistant gunnery officer plays cowboy with his .45.
An all-girl orchestra entertains Daniels and her nest of destroyers. Commander Riley orders Ensign York to escort the ladies and chaplain ashore and "shoot the chaplain if he starts any funny business."
Victory in Europe, and we learn of the death camps. Lieut. (jg) Salter reveals to Ens. York that he is a Jew and that nearly all of his relatives were exterminated.
Daniels fights a typhoon while at anchor with powerless destroyers alongside. Captain Balll is crushed. At sea, a destroyer founders with all hands. An AWOL seaman disappears.
Daniels's workload increases as ships prepare for the voyage home. A torpedo is dropped and Lieut. (jg) Salter is maimed. The experienced reserves head home and Ensign Renton becomes the first lieutenant, and Ens. York the navigator. The AWOL sailor is brutally murdered.
As part of the Magic Carpet, Daniels prepares to steam for San Francisco, returning servicemen home for Christmas. While homeward bound Commander Riley notifies the ensigns of their promotion to lieutenant (junior grade) and warns of typhoons ahead.

Pacific Voices: Keeping Our Cultures Alive

"If you had to choose only one object that embodies the richness of your culture and provides you with a sense of cultural identity, what would it be?" Miriam Kahn and Erin Younger asked this question of the community leaders who helped to create the "Pacific Voices" permanent exhibit at the University of Washington's Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. The answers they received, presented here in Pacific Voices, are intimate, heartfelt, and, in some cases, spellbinding.
The groundbreaking "Pacific Voices" exhibit grew out of a five-year collaborative process that brought together members of Washington State's diverse Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American communities. The exhibition became a vehicle for the expression of a variety of voices exploring sources of cultural identity: objects, rituals, ceremonies, and traditions that both anchor and showcase the ways of life of Pacific Rim communities.
Each of the seventeen chapters highlights a unique cultural object: Rose Dang and Thuy Vu see the Vietnamese incense burner as a vehicle for carrying prayers; 'Iwalani Christian calls the Hawaiian pahu "the voice of the gods"; the Reverend Dean Koyama describes the Japanese obutsudan as an altar for remembering loved ones; and Vi Hilbert presents the Coast Salish river canoe as "a place to learn patience." Each vibrant narrative is accompanied by colorful photographs and illustrations, and helpful sidebars provide historical and contextual information. Taken together, the stories in Pacific Voices provide a fresh perspective on the multicultural world in which we live, as well asvaluable insights into the diverse cultures of the Pacific Rim.
